Richmond Democrats Double Membership Capacity, Welcome New Members
Richmond, VA — Richmond Democrats unanimously voted to double the committee’s membership capacity at its general body meeting on Thursday, October 6. The amendments to the bylaws create 270 new membership slots with targets for each city council district to ensure fair geographic representation across the city.
“Increasing our membership and participation is a top priority for the new committee leadership, and I want to thank our committee members for approving amendments to our bylaws to allow for our growth,” RCDC Chair Jamie Nolan said. “Everyone who wants to invest their time and talent to strengthen the Democratic Party here in Richmond should be welcomed with open arms. As we recruit new members, we are especially working to make sure our local party is representative of and accessible to the diverse communities we serve.”
During RCDC’s committee reorganization this summer, 322 Democrats applied for the 231 membership slots allocated under the old bylaws. Up to 501 committee members can be elected under the newly amended bylaws, and the committee is accepting membership applications immediately.
While all Richmond City Democratic Committee meetings are open to the public, individuals who are elected as committee members have committee voting rights and additional responsibilities. Membership responsibilities include: attending committee meetings, supporting get out the vote efforts for Democratic candidates, and participating in other committee business.
Interested Democrats can apply for committee membership online, return a completed membership form to RCDC’s Secretary at any committee meeting, or mail a completed membership form to: Richmond City Democratic Committee, 919 East Main Street, Suite 2050, Richmond VA 23219. Applications for membership must be voted on and approved by the full committee.
RCDC will host the Sixth Annual Dem-O-Q, a free community cookout, this Saturday, October 13, 3-5pm in Byrd Park with special guests Attorney General Mark Herring, Congressman Donald McEachin and Senator Jennifer McClellan.
